Lehman Caves Electrical Upgrade and Replacement

This SNPLMA funded project will replace the aging lighting system inside Lehman Caves with modernized equipment and infrastructure. As it currently stands, parts are no longer manufactured for a number of cave systems, and sections of the cave are forced to go dark as components fail. The original lighting system was installed in 1941 and was replaced with the current lighting system in 1977.

Dates: Winter 2025 through Spring 2026

Status 09/2025: Demolition is slated to begin October 20, 2025 with construction of new systems beginning shortly after. Lehman Caves and the Lehman Caves Visitor Center will be closed for the duration of the project.

Alternatives: While the Lehman Caves Visitor Center is closed, the Great Basin Visitor Center in Baker will be open 7 days per week. See current operating hours here. Cave tours will be offered once again in Spring of 2026 when the project is completed. The rest of Great Basin National Park remains open for hiking and winter recreation.
